Chocolate Cheesecake--One of Life's Treats by Laura Weaver
My longtime boyfriend and I had one of the most romantic "dates" of our relationship...an evening of realization...a night of enjoying true pleasures. We didn't spend the time at a stylish night club or a Broadway play. Neither did it occur during a romantic vacation getaway. This remarkable evening took place in our own apartment.
You might say that our relationship had grown a bit stale. Most couples who have been a twosome as long as we may experience similar feelings and actions. We seemed to take each other for granted. We still found enjoyable experiences in our lives together, but we didn't seem to take notice of them as much as we used to. We still got along okay, but it was plain that we were both distracted. When we realized that, it scared us. The point had arrived to bring some pizzazz back to the relationship that we still cherished.
The night actually started with a sadly unremarkable supper. To be honest, I don't even recall what we had. Our perfect time at our place started without fanfare shortly after supper. I brought our chocolate cheesecake into the living room and placed it on the table. Subdued lighting was created by the softness of four or five After supper, I lit a few scented candles in the living room, turned on some barely noticeable music for the stereo and presented the chocolate cheesecake. We sat on the sofa and relaxed from our hectic days. A feeling of calm overcame me, and I noticed that my partner was relaxing as well. The best part of the evening started!
We didn't start speaking immediately for us. We picked up our forks at the same time and and began to eat our cheesecake. With the very first mouthful, we were inspired by the luscious chocolate flavor we both enjoyed. It tasted wonderful. The smooth texture and tantalizing combination of sweet chocolate and tangy cheese awakened our senses. The time for us to begin truly talking happened easily enough while we ate. At first we just talked about the delicious dessert. Then we moved on to the more important topics. It was a conversation we had needed to have for a long time.
We were able to talk about our problems and concerns; about our past and present expectations; about our future plans and dreams. Through this simple talk, we started to see that unrealistic expectations were what caused trouble between couples. We gained a deeper understanding and truer respect for each other that night. We became content in the beautiful life we were building together.
As long as I live, as long as my partner and I are together, I will always recall the evening we had that night while enjoying our chocolate cheesecake. That was the night we realized we would make a lifetime commitment to each other, because we loved the comfort and admiration we had with each other--plus we enjoyed the same simple pleasures in life. Sometimes it's just simple pleasures in life that keep life interesting...simple pleasures like chocolate cheesecake.
We probably could have had that conversation without the cheesecake, but it sure was a lot more fun with it!
